The destination for today was Chicago to visit my daughter Trisha and her finance John. They recently moved into a new apartment in Wheeling which is a suburb on the north side of Chicago. There place is very nice. Trisha and I went for a walk around the complex - it is very large! Rumor has it we are having pork chops and corn on the grill for supper (sounds good to me!) when john gets back from work.
The route I chose to ride today was the more scenic way to get here. I rode along the Mississippi river most of the way on route to Dubuque Iowa and then headed east from there. Driving the freeway just isn't much fun so this was a good alternative. It took a little longer (about 10 hours: left the house at 6:00 a.m. and arrived shortly after 4:00 p.m.) but it was a much more pleasant ride. Today's ride was 499 miles.
The weather was cloudy and overcast almost the whole way. The air temperature was in the mid 50's when I left and it was in the mid 60's for most of the ride. Had a few showers along the way so I put on my rain gear but nothing serious. Partially I put it on just to stay a little warmer. Who would have thought in the middle of July.
Tomorrow is going to be mostly a freeway day (bummer the good roads are so far from home). I will go through Chicago and then head to Indianapolis IN and from there go cross country towards Lexington Kentucky. Once I get south and east of there, the ride will improve tremendously.
